The Symphonic Band program is an academic program offered at West Johnston High School. There are two bands; the Wind Symphony under the direction of Mr. David S. Duffy and the Symphonic Band under the direction of Mr. Garrett L. Griffin.
Each of the bands are comprised of members from the marching band and interested students selected through auditions. These symphonic bands perform at concerts, and participate in local and national competitions, and selected community activities.
The Symphonic Bands compete at the
National level through attendance at the
Dixie Classic
Festival and the
National Adjudicators Invitational. Local and Regional
competitions
include attendance at the NC Bandmaster and the
Southeastern District Band Director's
Association events.

The West Johnston High School Symphonic Bands have performed
throughout the Eastern United States, including performances
in 2003 at
Atlanta's
Symphony Hall
and in 2006 at the
Rialto Center for the Performing Arts.

West Johnston High School Band had the most students ever named to
2008 Southeastern All-District Band and the most from any
school in Johnston County this year. Seven hundred students
from high
schools throughout the thirty county Southeastern District
auditioned
to become a member of the All-District Band.
