Marching Band is an academic course at West Johnston High
School, but this class teaches more than just learning
how to play an instrument and how to march drill
correctly. The WJHS band program helps students learn
about setting and reaching goals, teamwork, and leadership.
Their philosophy being, "With hard work and
dedication, anything is possible".
Three weekday afternoons (sometimes more) are spent
rehearsing on the school's parking lot. Friday nights, the marching band performs
at WJHS Home Football Games. Saturdays are usually spent
rehearsing, performing at local and national field show
competitions, marching in parades and selected community activities.
West Johnston's
success is evident in its top place finishes among the
various state and national level competitions. Examples of
competitions at the national level include the Bands of
America Regional and Grand Nationals. Local
competitions include Capital City Expo, Cary Band Day and
the Clayton Band Classic.
Receiving an invitation from BOA has never been accomplished
by a second year band.
Yet, beginning in its second year (2003), the West Johnston
Marching Band has been accepted to BOA regional and Grand
National events in each consecutive year, including 2008.
West is one of only
four high school bands from North Carolina to make a BOA
Regional Final in the last eleven years.
Since 2004, the West Johnston Marching Band has qualified
for semifinals –in every year BOA Grand Nationals that they have attended
In November 2009, the marching band was once again selected
as a semi-finalist, and received third place in class AAA.
This marching band is 130
members strong and is directed by
Garrett Griffin.
Being a member of West Johnston's
Marching Band is one of the most demanding, exciting and
rewarding classes in which a West student can enroll.
